The Glass House: Big Sur Architect Mickey Muennig’s Hideaway on the California Coast
I got a chance to visit this place a few years ago, when my cousin Paul replaced Mickey’s living roof. Architect Mickey Muennig, Big Sur’s green building legend, pioneered the art of the green roof years before most of modern society even knew that living roofs existed. Mickey made building into and with the landscape in a way that enhanced the natural order of things a “thing.” He was one of cousin Paul’s early mentors and probably the reason behind Paul going on to found Rana Creek, a now renowned ecological design firm.
Past a private gate and up a winding road, this spot is pretty remote. Mickey Muennig, now in his late 70s, allegedly lived here for some 18 years while working on this other home (the one that needed a new living roof on this particular adventure), which is set in a rolling hillside just a few steps away.
